Under the direction of Don Schultz of the Overbrook Pride City
Park Committee, over thirty Overbrook area residents with rakes and shovels put
in a work day at the city lake—the site of proposed development of a city
park. The group was comprised of members
of various Overbrook civic organizations, including Pride and Rotary, and area
residents of all ages. The day’s
activities began at 8:00 am, although some workers arrived as early as 7:00,
and it is estimated that around 100 work hours were provided. Workers pruned trees and cleared and burned
brush. However, the principal project of
the day was to bring in and feather out dirt along the concrete trail, which
runs from the Rotary Shelter east of the ball diamonds and along the west side
of the lake to the fishing pier near the dam.
Equipment, including a tractor, a skid-steer loader, and a dump truck
were operated and/or the use donated by Larry Butel,
Jim Foster, Todd Goodyear, Roger Harmon, Jagger
Swisher, Bob Sisson, and Bruce Smith.
Seeding the walk aprons to buffalo grass will be done in a few
weeks. This will complete the west
walkway, which comprises Phase I under the trail project provided under grant
funding from the National Trail Act (US Department of Transportation), to allow
application for Phase II of the grant in October, 2006. Upon approval, the trail will be extended
across the dam and around the east side of the lake. When both phases are complete, the walk
circling the lake will total approximately one mile. The trail will provide a wonderful resource
for the many Overbrook citizens who walk daily on the streets, because of the
lack of a sidewalk network. Don Schultz
said, “I want to thank all the volunteers of time and equipment for their
attendance and performance, and for the fine outcome.”
The Overbrook Rotary Shelter and south trailhead can be
reached by a road from the northeast corner of the ball diamonds parking
lot. The north trailhead is accessible
from the parking lot at the dam.
