Board Minutes

Marion Burns called the meeting to order at the Melvern Whistle Stop Café.  Ms. Burns added a correction to the September’s minutes.

It was moved and seconded to adopt the minutes by Mark Goehring and Jon Wilhite.  Mark Goehring submitted the treasurer report.  The OCED current balance is $10,143.24.  Jim Nelson moved to adopt the treasurer report and Don Schultz second the motion.

Bert Mosier Economic Development Director report:

Mr. Mosier invited Marg Archer from the appraiser’s office as a guest speaker.

The Osage County Tourism Committee next meeting is at the Vassar Playhouse on November 20, 2006 at 1:00pm.  The agenda for this meeting is Osage County’s historical sites the Santa Fe Trail and community events.  This discussion will help the tourism committee perform an assessment for promotional activities.

The tourism guide update; Mr. Mosier is currently working on the guide with Peggy Clark and the estimated date of distribution is March 1, 2007.

Overbrook convenience store project; the building permit has been approved and construction has begun.

USDA Rural Development meeting has been scheduled December 12, 2006 at 7:00pm in Burlingame at the Museum Annex Building.  This meeting is open to the public. The USDA Rural Development program is an incredible way to support community revitalization.

The Kansas Tourism Guide was circulated for approval.

Don Schultz expressed interest in hosting an OCED Growth Fair for the annual meeting.  Open discussion about the growth fair promoted numerous ideas.  It was decided that the Melvern Community building was the likely place to hold such an event.  A membership drive was discussed offering incentives for attendance.  Members of OCED were solicited to help organize this event.  Don Schultz, Dee Robinson, Mark Goehring, and Marion Burns volunteered.  Don Schultz offered to email everyone with a date to discuss this event.  Dee Robinson would find an open date to reserve the Melvern Community building.

Jason from the Osage County Herald announced that the Herald and the Osage City Chamber of Commerce would be hosting a candidate forum on November 1, 2006 at the Santa Fe Depot.

The meeting was turned over to the guest speaker from the Osage County Appraiser’s office Marg Archer.  Marg Archer informed OCED about the current tax base and future burdens if exemptions are granted.  Ms. Archer cautioned OCED and the Os. Co. Commissioners to be aware of the adverse effects on local democracy if tax abatements continue to be considered.

Meeting adjourned
